Seven emirates – seven stories. Their names sound like ancient spells, and each one hides a legend. Let’s uncover their hidden meanings together and feel the Eastern magic of words.
Abu Dhabi (Abu Dhabi) – “Father of Gazelle”
The largest and wealthiest emirate got its name from…a gazelle! Yes, you heard that right.
It is believed that the name comes from the Arabic expression “Abu Dhabi”, which literally means “father of gazelle”. According to legend, a hunter saw here a lone gazelle with her fawn, and this place was named in her honor.
Interesting fact: Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE and a symbol of prosperity. It’s also home to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque—a stunning white architectural gem. Read more about this amazing journey here.
Dubai (Dubai) – City of Dreams
One of the most recognizable names in the world! But where did it come from?
There are several versions. One popular theory suggests that the name originates from the word “daba” (or “daba bay”) meaning “to arrive” or “enter into port”. In essence, Dubai translates as “the arrival point.” How fitting!
Once a fishing village, now it’s a futuristic city with Burj Khalifa, man-made islands, and shopping for every taste. And yes, you can even see snow in the desert at Ski Dubai!
Sharjah (Sharjah) – Cultural Heart of the UAE
Sharjah has soul. Here traditions and Islamic values are strictly observed. The name likely stems from an ancient term related to “capture” or “possession,” but its exact origins remain debatable.
What matters: Sharjah prohibits alcohol and parties, yet boasts excellent museums, libraries, and architecture. It’s truly a cultural oasis—perfect for those seeking deeper insight into Arab culture.
Ras Al Khaimah (Ras Al Khaimah) – “Top of the Tent”
Poetic among all! Translated from Arabic, Ras Al Khaimah means “head (or top) of the tent”. Imagine Bedouin life—the tents were homes, and the highest spot in camp often bore this name.
This northernmost emirate features beautiful mountains and natural wadis (ravines). Ideal for active vacations and eco-tourism. Additionally, some of the region’s oldest archaeological sites are found here!
Umm Al Quwain (Umm Al Quwain) – “Mother of Strength”
Sounds regal! Umm means “mother”, while Al Quwain stands for “strength” or “might”. Thus, the literal translation is “Mother of Strength”. Strong title for a small but cozy emirate.
Here you’ll find fewer skyscrapers but more nature: lagoons, reserves, fishing boats. Perfect weekend getaway with family or romantic escape.
Ajman (Ajman) – Tiny but Proud
Ajman is tiny but full of heart. Its name may derive from the tribe Ajman, who lived here for centuries. Ajman offers comfort, clean beaches, and warm hospitality. Experience authentic local life without big-city noise.
Fujairah (Fujairah) – Pearl on the East
Unique because it borders the Gulf of Oman (not the Persian Gulf). The name possibly derives from the Arabic word “fajr” meaning “dawn” or “source”. Another version links it to color—”ashen gray,” due to mountain pebbles.
Fujairah showcases mountains, fortresses, waterfalls, and breathtaking views. Great destination for adventure seekers and inspiration hunters. Plus, try freshly caught seafood straight off the boat!
When we travel, it’s important not just to visit, but to feel the country. Knowing the origins of these names helps us understand the culture, respect traditions, and immerse ourselves fully in the atmosphere.
